What cause gaps when you wear a shirt or blouse with buttons, and the solutions to prevent gap!
By thougtforce
During some years or so, I have been observing and thinking about the phenomena that almost always occurs when a women wears a blouse or a shirt with buttons – there is a gap at the bust height! My question is: Why is that so, and must it be?
Now you are thinking; buy a bigger size, that will solve the problem! Yes, it is an opportunity in order to get rid of that kind of gap that occurs if the blouse is too tight but there are other types of gaps that occur not because of a small blouse, on the contrary, the blouse can also be to big!
So, now I want to try my hypotheses on you!
What kind of gaps can occur when you wear a blouse with buttons down the front?
The blouse is too small!
That type of gap is very usual and is due to that the blouse is too small or that the delights are too big! Either way, when you go dressed with such a gap you give the impression of untidiness or that you are sloppy. In some cases it can also be seen as a try to highlight the large breasts in a distasteful manner.
And the solution to this problem is: get a bigger blouse! That can do the trick in some cases, but not in all!
There is a gap because the blouse is too big!
This may seems like a small problem but it isn’t! If the blouse is too large a mass of creases is formed when you for example sit down. And you are forced to smooth the blouse every time you sit down so the creases don’t stick out. And the gap that occurs on this type is also very large, because the buttons is too far away for you. And to wear a too big blouse isn’t attractive on anyone. It looks like you are wearing a sack, and the result is that you look fat even if you are not!
The solution to this type of gap is: bye a smaller blouse! But we have already tried that, and that wasn’t a good solution!
The gap is due to that the you wear the wrong type of bra!
This is the typical advice given to women who complain about blouse gaps. It is said to be because the woman wears a bra that pushes up the breasts too much and thus provide a protruding silhouette. And the solution is to buy a bra that “minimizes” the breasts; a minimizer! This minimizing is accomplished by moving the “too big” breasts under the arms instead of forward! I have had that kind of bra and it isn’t something that I recommend. It is impossible to get a sleek silhouette in such a bra, the result is that your bust looks like a shapeless loaf and the feeling of having the breasts under the arms is not particularly pleasant.
Other type of blouse gap!
But because I don’t wear blouses often, it doesn’t stop me from observing other women. And what do you think I have observed; most women wear blouses with gap! Skinny, thick, long or short women, small or large blouses, push- up or minimize, it doesn’t matter. Most blouses gaps! If the blouse does not gap when you stand up, it is gap when you sit down or when you bend over! This is another problem. You can have a blouse that is perfect when you walk, stand still and sit, but when you bend or lean forward there is maybe not a gap, but you give free insight over the cleavage to those sitting beside you. I’m not one who has a habit of look at women’s breasts but sometimes it is difficult not to notice. Especially when the opening between the buttons is such that the surroundings can see it all!
Other possible causes to gap in blouses!
Gravity has done its thing…
It can of course be because that the bust has slipped down a bit due to gravity effect over the years and in that case your bust is located below the larger part of the blouse. But that problem can be easily solved with a firm push up bra! And if that was the reason to blouse gaps, the gaps would only occur on older women and that’s not so! So, that can’t be the reason. But that was what I thought for many years. And I tried to push them up which didn’t feel at all comfortable. The only result was that the bra straps chafed into the shoulders and the bra squeezed around the back, and of course; the blouse gap was still there.
Not enough fabric in the blouse!
But in some models it doesn’t seem to be enough fabric. It can’t be that difficult to sew blouses for women with normal to big breasts!
Misplaced buttons!
And on some models, the buttons are placed wrong with one of the buttons sitting above the bust and one button below: How can it not be a gap?
Solutions!
You need Hollywood fashion tape!
This is a transparent double-sides tape that can be used in many ways and is usual among many Hollywood stars. To prevent a gap you can attach a strip between skin and clothes and sort of clue the blouse against the skin and provide a steady blouse front with no gaps! I can imagine this is very good idea for a special occasion, or for every day use if you have the time to put it on and off!
The ultimate solution! Don’t wear a blouse with buttons!
This has been my latest solution after trying everything else. But I look wistful at all stylish blouses available in the shops. I think a nice blouse with buttons gives a subtle, elegant, beautiful and clean impression, (without gapes that is)!
A blouse with buttons can usefully be used with a pair of pants and immediately you look better dressed than with a shirt.
Or could some of the gaps be due to that the design is wrong!
This is what bothering me! I think something must have gone wrong when the blouses were designed from the start! And my conclusion is; nobody really thought about the fact that women have breasts!! I mean, really thought about the problem and came up with a solution!
As always, the raw model was the male, who has a flat chest! On shirts for men the button can be located anywhere and with any distance between them. If the male just find the right size, his shirt fits and with no gaps. And if the shirt would gap a little it doesn’t matter much, since there is nothing that sticks out any way.
So, my theory is that when shirts for women were designed and done, they took a shirt for men and tightened the shirt a little in the waist, added some more fabric in breast height and sewed bust seams under the breasts.
Conclusion: We need appliances!
I usually add a push-button that isn’t noticeable on those blouses where that is possible. But that isn’t going to work on a blouse in thin fabric. In those cases I will use the fashion tape! But when I add a push button, or a fashion tape, there is never a gap! So, that gets me back to my former thought; there is something wrong with the design! And that is what women have to solve with different appliances!

Onegoodwomen~ A good tailor could solve the problem! But they are hard to find. On the other hand it´s just as difficult to find a shirt that fits because women come in many different shapes and sizes! So, a tailor is probably a better option! Happy to see you here, thanks and take care!
She IS hard to find.........give her , her value. Her skill is worth the price.............We pay builders, plumbers, medical personell, caretakers, mechanics.......
pay the one with a skill of tailoring, as a 'hard to fit' woman, SHE makes me look good.......she has value.
You are so right, onegoodwoman! I am used to be able to buy clothes instant in a shop, so I haven´t even thought about a tailor. I will go out searching! Thanks for your great advice!
Nice hub,i have always had this problem, apparently my bust is too big for the size of clothes I wear, so I always have to buy bigger blouses which does not flatter my figure, so i resorted to wearing t-shirts and any blouse dat does not have buttons. lol. Thanks for sharing
xixi12, welcome to this hub! We are probably many sharing the same problem and also the same experiences! Having to buy bigger clothes isn´t flattering at all, and I have also to some degree resorted to t-shirts! Design for the masses isn´t for all of us! I am so glad you came by, I appreciate it!

I love "the gap"
One thing I feel lead to gap is the obesity. Don't you think so.
prasadjin, Yes, that would be nice! It is an annoying problem for many women! Thanks for your comment!
MurciélagoHeart, Good that someone does, and can see this from another view:) As a women this phenomena is only a problem and to be wearing a blouse that gaps in the wrong way feels no good! However, I agree that a nice cleveage can be very tidily! Thanks for coming by, and giving your view!
dpatullo741, I agree, obesity must give many problems when chosing clothing and gaps is probably one of them! But gaps also occur when women with normal weight wear some blouses, so for women with owerwight it must be even more difficult. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
i love to show my cleavage, no problem for me nor my husband
I must admit, this is the first time I see a hub about gaps, Great Hub by the way!
sameerk, No, a cleavage is not a problem, but a gap between the buttons due to less well-fitting clothes is something different, because it just look undity and is unwanted. But there is always many different ways to look at a problem! Thanks for coming by!
Max Clayne, I haven´t seen one before either! Strange, because I do know that this is a common problem! And I dont think that gaps is that embarrassing to talk about either! Thanks for stopping by and for the "great"!

Marvelous!
Designers, design for the masses.
Just because a woman is x size
in the bust, doesn't mean she is x
size in the shoulders......
A good tailor, is worth her skill!
